Is private school tuition tax deductible?
In the United States, private school tuition is not tax deductible on federal returns. One exception is if your child attends a private school for special needs, and you have a physician’s referral proving your child requires specialized education. In this case, tuition expenses may qualify as deductible medical expenses.
Consult a tax advisor in your state. Some states offer tax incentives or deductions for K–12 private school tuition.
U.S. families may also consider a 529 Plan or Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA) as a tax-advantaged way of saving for educational expenses.
