At St. Johnsbury Academy, we believe in young people, and in what is possible when they are supported in becoming the best people, best learners, and best community members and citizens they can be. Academics

Arts

The fine arts department offers instruction, resources, and a culture that inspires students to develop artistic awareness and proficiency by providing a professional environment and a comprehensive curriculum in the visual and performing arts.

Career and Technical Education

The Career and Technical Education department prepares students for both post-secondary education and the world of work. We provide educational opportunities covering industry-specific skill training and credentialing, general employability skills, academic and career skill integration, and personal enrichment.

Guided Studies Learning Support

Our Guided Studies program is designed to foster and promote student growth through one-on-one instruction in a structured setting. All students focus on current class assignments as vehicles to build individual learning skills and strategies.

Athletics

Athletics are an important part of daily life at St. Johnsbury Academy. A large number of our students participate in at least one sport each year and many are three-season athletes. Eligible varsity sports are played at the Division I level, pairing our teams against the most competitive opponents in the state.

Signature Programs

Although the academics at St. Johnsbury Academy are exceptional across the board, a number of programs truly set us apart. From high-level math to the Field Semester, from the culinary arts to fashion design, our Signature Programs ignite passion within our students, often leading them to pursue careers in fields first explored on our campus.

Real Talk

The Guided Studies program allowed me a block of time with the support of the GS teachers to help me complete my homework. It was like having a block with a parent by your side helping you through your assignments. Because of my work in GS, I was able to succeed and thrive academically and socially. I even graduated out of the Guided Studies after my junior year due to the skills I learned while in the program. I was ready to face senior year (and the rest of my life) on my own without that extra layer of support.

St. Johnsbury Academy has given me a great opportunity to strengthen my academics and find other avenues to pursue my interests, including a number of history classes. I have benefited from the wide course selection, including AP and advanced classes in many subjects. I have also participated in band, the Harvard Model Congress, Model U.N., and Green Mountain Boys’ State, which allowed me to meet peers with similar interests from across the U.S.

The boarding student program at the Academy is a great family and replaces life at home. During my one year stay at St. Johnsbury Academy, I found close friends from all over the world, discovered this unique sense of family and an amazing school spirit. I’m confident that my friendships will hold forever and that we all meet together soon! I want to thank all of my friends, family, faculty and staff, and especially my parents to allow me to come to St. Johnsbury Academy and make it the greatest year of my life!

The aspect of St. Johnsbury Academy academics that I found really valuable is the fact that almost all academic classes are offered at several different levels, including Advanced Placement. Courses such as AP Biology have been among my favorite classes at the Academy because of their rigor. AP classes are a great way for students to challenge themselves to learn at a faster pace and a higher level, as well as earn college credit. The large selection of AP courses—as well as Dual Enrollment classes that also count for college credit—ensures that students have many chances to take on a rigorous academic load that will help prepare them for college.
